Kampong Laut Cultural Hub is a cultural and heritage center dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history, traditions and contributions of the orang laut - Singapore's indigenous sea people.

Inspired by traditional kampong stilt houses and maritime settlements, this hub serves as an interactive space for education, storytelling and community engagement

CONCEPT

Concept Design - Voids

Concept Integration

A void in a stilt house is the open space beneath the raised structure. It improves airflow, protects against flooding, and creates a clear divide between the ground and living areas. This space also supports social interaction and shows how the building is organized, blending function with community use

The void in Kampong Laut Cultural Hub expands from the ground level to the 3rd level - 0m to 4m. Ranging from private voids to public voids the difference in height acts as a boundary. As a result of the sectional relationship in height, the void starts to serve as different spatial configurations for different uses.

BIGGER VOID = MORE PUBLIC
SMALLER VOID = MORE PRIVATE

Concept Design - Pitched Roof

Concept Integration

The pitched roof of a kampung stilt house is a symbol of both tradition and function, crafted to harmonize with the tropical climate. Its steep incline allows for efficient rainwater runoff, preventing water accumulation and structural damage

The roof of Kampung laut Cultural Hub is a hip pitched roof made from clay tiles. The roof is layered over the 3 buildings all together instead of each building having a roof for itself. This applies for both blocks making it seem as if the 3 buildings are one from afar. This also helps to not obstruct the views from surrounding buildings
